Wilderness Road State Park Master Plan

Wilderness Road State Park Master Plan

In accordance with the Code of Virginia, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is updating the master plan for Wilderness Road State Park located in Lee County, VA. The purpose of a master plan is to guide the management and development of a park by identifying natural, cultural and physical resources; identifying park needs; and engaging with the public. Virginia state park master plans are updated every 10 years.

Sobre el parque

Wilderness Road State Park is located at the intersection of Routes 58 (Wilderness Road) and 923 (Martin's Station Trail), five miles west of Ewing, Va., and 10 miles east of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Middlesboro, KY.

Wilderness Road offers picnicking, hiking, and nature and living history programs. Visitors can enjoy the visitor center, which is home to a theater showing the award-winning docudrama "Wilderness Road, Spirit of a Nation." The center also has a frontier museum and a gift shop with unique regional gifts. The park features the reconstructed Martin's Station, an outdoor living history museum depicting life on Virginia's 1775 frontier. Guests also enjoy the park's picnic shelters, a 100-seat amphitheater, an ADA-certified playground, a sand volleyball court and horseshoe pits. Visitors can hike, bike or horseback ride on the 6.5-mile Wilderness Road Trail. An 1870s-era mansion is available for weddings and meetings. It features a solarium that's perfect for showers, birthdays, and other special occasions. The park's amphitheater is also available for group functions.

Wilderness Road State Park Master Plan Public Information Meeting

The Department of Conservation and Recreation hosted a public information meeting regarding the master plan update on March 4, 2026, at the park's visitor center theater.

The meeting was also available online for those visitors unable to attend the meeting in person. A recording of that meeting can be seen here.

The presentation can be viewed here.

Master plans are updated every 10 years and help guide park development and conservation. During the meeting, attendees learned more about the master plan process and had the opportunity to ask questions.

There will now be a 30-day public comment period ending on April 5, 2026. Comments can be sent by email to PlanningResources@dcr.virginia.gov. Please write "Wilderness Road State Park master plan" in the subject line.
