Pottery and ceramics have been made and used by humans across the world for nearly 30,000 years. The earliest known pottery in Virginia dates to over 3,000 years ago.

Low-fired clay, or earthenware, dominated American ceramics from the colonial era to the late 1700s. One form of earthenware found in this region was called Colonoware. Learn with Rangers about the significance of ceramic production, the silenced history of Colonoware, and how it relates to the lives of Indigenous Peoples and African Americans living in Mason Neck.
