The Panhandle Peninsula is a unique historical treasure that very few park visitors have explored. This remote 1,900 acre peninsula was once a thriving community that supported the Monte Parvo Plantation, the Occoneechee Farm, Rosyln Castle, and many small farms. We will work our way down the Panhandle Peninsula trail aboard the park’s wagon pulled by our trusty tractor. We will make stops along the trail to explore what remains of home sites that once flourished in the 1700 and 1800s. The park ranger will share what archaeological and historical records have documented to preserve the historical legacy of the peninsula. You should be prepared to walk on uneven ground and can expect to walk at least two miles before the trip is complete. Please wear your favorite hiking boots and bring plenty of water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for the weather. Rain gear is recommended. Space is limited, so please pre-register at the Visitor Center or call 434-374-2210.
