A short ranger talk offering a general introduction to the lives and experiences of enslaved people in central Virginia during the nineteenth century. The program covers the basic structure of slavery in the region, the daily realities faced by enslaved families, and how the institution shaped the broader social and economic world of the Commonwealth before and during the Civil War. Speak to a ranger in the Visitor Center to start this program anytime between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
