Pocahontas State Park is accepting applications for the Interpretive Ranger position.
Job Summary:
We are seeking an outgoing, energetic, and responsible individual to work with a wide variety of guests as part of the park's educational and interpretive programming. This position focuses on the development, implementation, and monitoring of programs that maintain and improve the standards of animal care. The ideal candidate will effectively prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and interact positively with the public.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee all aspects of the treatment and handling of educational animals, including the maintenance and sanitation of animal enclosures and equipment.
- Complete animal care logs accurately and in a timely manner, following all guidelines set forth by law and government permits.
- Develop, coordinate, and facilitate interpretive and educational programs and outreach activities.
- Plan, market, and implement interpretive programs and activities that highlight the natural and cultural resources of Pocahontas State Park.
- Maintain accuracy of animal care and interpretive attendance logs, and conduct basic facility maintenance as needed.
- Conduct programs such as guided hikes, canoe and kayak tours, campfires, children’s programs, wildlife presentations, and other environmental education activities.
- Assist in staffing the Visitor Center and Civilian Conservation Corps Museum, as well as maintaining interpretive exhibits, equipment, and kiosks.
- Perform work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Prior experience in animal husbandry, with an emphasis on reptiles; experience may include hobby or professional levels.
- Ability to develop, organize, and facilitate natural, cultural, and historical programs and events for all ages.
- Strong verbal and written communication and customer service skills to be able to respond to emails and phone calls, as well as interact with the public professionally.
Additional Considerations
- Background in biology, history, parks and recreation, elementary education, and/or wildlife studies.
- Experience in natural and/or historical interpretation to include knowledge of Virginia history; understanding of ecology and familiarity with the area's flora and fauna.
- Experience in marketing, advertising, and promoting programs and special events.
- Conversational speaking skills in world languages to include but not limited to: Spanish, American Sign Language, Arabic, etc.

Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds assisted.
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free parking or admission to all Virginia State Parks. DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
