Pocahontas State Park is accepting applications for the Maintenance Ranger Supervisor (Mountain Bike Trail Crew).
Job Summary
We are seeking a reliable, motivated individual to join our Trail Crew. This position plays a vital role in maintaining and enhancing the park’s mountain biking trail system. Trail Crew Members perform routine grounds care, maintenance, and light construction while working independently to ensure safe, enjoyable trails for all visitors.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform groundskeeping, including mowing and weed trimming
- Construct, maintain, and rehabilitate trails
- Conduct sawyer work and perform light carpentry tasks
- Operate heavy equipment as needed for trail projects
- Assist and collaborate with volunteer groups on trail-related projects
- Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
- Availability to work varying shifts including multiple weekends per month
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- General knowledge of and experience using common hand tools and power tools
Additional Considerations
- Sawyer experience
- Experience in carpentry or other building trades
- Experience operating heavy machinery
- Previous mountain bike trail construction or maintenance experience
- Experience working with volunteers, individually or in groups
- Certification as a registered herbicide and pesticide technician.
Special Instructions
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free parking or admission to all Virginia State Parks. DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
